I often hear people say that they should be told if there is a Paedophile living near them - WHY??? To protect your children? - HOW??? Think about it.
Using this logic, why dont we demand to be told when a convicted arsonist is near us - they could burn our house down, or a burgular - they could break in and rob us, a drug dealer - they could sell drugs to our kids - DO YOU SEE THE POINT.
Making paedophiles details public acheives NOTHING, encourages illegal vigilante groups and more importantly - drives them into hiding where thay can not be treated or monitored.
WHEN WILL PEOPLE USE THEIR BRAINS AND WAKE UP!!!
We all know that when sweet little kiddy winks are involved we all get mushy and emotional and loose all sense of reason - but cant you see this behaviour is making the situation worse!!
Come on - lets use our brains yeh.
Intelligent views it will be interesting to see how many vigilanties leave stupid comments!!!!

I feared this question would bring out the loons so to clarify some points ; some paedos just look at child porn and thats it, some (about 8% UK) are members of rings who rape, torture and murder. Vigilante behaviour drives these less dangerous paedpohiles into those organised rings. 2) Paedophila is a paraphjelia and can be treated - Benperidol is the drug of choice with intense therapy.

Vigilante action just does not work in a civilised society.
The result of publication of such information would be the paedophiles would go underground, out of view of the authorities. Also, as has happened before, victims of mistaken identity get maimed and killed.
Not long ago, some total morons attacked a paediotrician (childrens doctor) because they thought it sound like paedophile.
The sort of people who call for vigilante action are generally poorly educated and lacking in morality.

Oh lord. Surely the format of Yahoo! Answers isn't best designed to discuss an issue such as this?
Burglars steal things, arsonists burn things, but at the end of the day, things can be replaced. Childhood is a once only, special time of life. Or at least it should be. Many children are damaged both physically and mentally by abuse such as this. Often by people who are in positions of power, if people know where these people are then it is hoped that they will not be allowed into a position where they can abuse that power in the same way again.
This does not always work of course but it's a start. Of course it's an abuse of their civil liberties but they appear to have no respect for legal, cultural or civil sensibilities so maybe there is a case for it. This is a highly emotional subject and these groups of vigilantes you speak of are wrong too, but most parents would do anything to protect the innocence of their children, wright or wrong.
I notice you have refrained from suggesting a better alternative, may I presume you will be updating your question at some time with the solution?

In some States in the USA folk are made aware that they have a peodo in their area.
I have never understood why they dont boot them out?
The other 'criminals' you mention are irrelevant!
To my mind a child molester is way above any criminal and should be incarcerated for life.
Any other criminal will serve their jail time and will be given another chance, if they offend again they will be locked up again.
A child molester should never be released.

How any times have we read that a molester has been released in the same area where he did his child molesting?
If you were a relative of the child would you not be a little tempted to kick his Fuc*ing head in, just a little bit???

I believe it is our right to know if our neighbor has been accused and found guilty in a court of law that he is a pedophile. I think they are some really sick people and even with help I don't think the treatment does justice. I am personally thinking they need to solve there problems with castration or something in that since so they are not thinking with the wrong head. I also believe that these people along with murder's drug dealers and etc need to be put off on a island all to there self's since they like living in that kind of environment they can leave the rest of us in piece what ever that is...
Personally I feel those who are survivors of this sort of abuse have all right to feel this way. If you have had someone mess with you and have to live through the nightmares and the fear than I think you would have a clue of how others feel. As far as feeling the way you do your entitle to your opinion but everyone else is entitled to the way we feel... That don't make us less intelligent. How would you feel if it was yourself or your child that one of these sick bastards sexually messed with I think than you will open your eyes and know how some of us feel.

What is the difference between a pedophile looking at a child being abused (child porn) and one who does the abusing himself? None in my eyes - a child is still being abused.
If I knew a paedophile was living next to the park - especially if he had a history of encouraging children to come near him, I'd keep my child away. If I had one next door, I'd be more careful about letting my child outside with a padling pool & having other people's kids round (for example).
I would like them to have a great big P. tattooed to their forheads - but then, It would be good if rapists had a great big R. attached - then we would be aware of who they were.

That's right to protect our children I feel you speak from a non parental point of view so therefore are not looking at it from a emotional view point. I agree with what you are saying completely why should we be told for all the reasons you have stated but when children are involved it raises alot of high feeling from people and parents have a overwhelming need to protect their off springs so we do feel that we should have the right to know, say for instance you were looking to buy a house would you consider moving there if the area had a high rate of paedophiles residing there, no you wouldn't because children do have the right to feel safe in their surroundings and should be able to play outside, run around naked in the summer without the fear that they are at risk and yes we should be vigilant with our children but they also need to have a chance to gain there own Independence we are bringing up future adults and how else are we meant to teach them how to behave correctly in public if not been allowed a bit of freedom in a safe environment at least as safe as we know it to be.

Well if we punished all the criminals effectively we would not need to be told as most of them would be behind bars, and really stiff sentencing would also act as a deterrent. Are you seriously saying that if you had kids you wouldnt want to know if a paedophile moved into your street? Whilst I in no way condone vgilante behaviour I do think their details should be made public. As for drivng them into hiding, that is where they already are till they are caught! Paedophilia is not a condition of choice, in the same way that our sexuality is not a matter of choice. There is no treatment!

because paedophiles groom..or befriend whole families, they are sly and dangerous people...wed all like to know about any criminals that live near us..but these are the 1's that pose an unseen poisonous danger to your children..bit like carbon monoxide..no family with children is safe..most intelligent and rational people will lose all cognitive thought processes when they re children are in danger...whatever the circumstances....
edit..jury doc...most drug dealers are there for all to see paedophiles operate in complete secrecy...u probably know at least 1 ...would you invite them for dinner to discuss therapies or would they be eyeing up your children instead of the menu...i see you asked a question about saddles for your horse riding daughter...i hope shes over 18 and doesnt need you too look out for her as much...do you see how easy it can be to form a common bond!!
edit jerry c completely agree with u except i think they should be put to good use and have them experimented on for say cancer, hiv, even test cosmetics on them ..for years animals have been used for theses purposes...they are lower than animals...

Oh I agree, but it would be cool to know where to give the likes of G.Glitter and his mates a good kicking. Frankly anyone convicted of such sex crimes should never be back in society anyway. How can you be an ex-paedophile? You don't get any ex-war criminals or murderers do you?
