x = # of non-student tickets
y = # of student tickets

x + y = 186
y = 186 - x
16x + 12y = 2640
16x + 12(186 - x) = 2640
16x + 2232 - 12x = 2640
4x = 408
=> x = 102
y = 186 - x
y = 186 - 102
=> y = 84

Let the number of $16 tickets be 'x' and then the number of $12 tickets will be (186-x){because the total number of tickets sold is 186.
Money collected from $16 tickets will be $16x
Money colllected from $12 tickets will be $12(186-x)
Now, the money collected is $2640.So,
$2640 = $ 16x +$12 (186-x)
$2640 = $ 16x + $2232 - $12x
$2640 = $ 4x + $2232
$2640 - $2232 = $4x
$308 = $4x
$308/$4 = x
x = 77 = Number of $16 tickets sold.
186-x = 186 - 77 = 109 = Number of $12 tickets sold.

Yes i have found it.
Hope I get the 10 points!!!!

2 equations, one for the ticket count, one for the money, x for number of nonstudent tickets, y for student:

x + y = 186
16x + 12y = 2640

multiply 1st equation by 12 and subtract it from 2nd.

16x + 12y = 2640
12x + 12y = 2232
------------------------
4x .......... = 408
x = 102
y = 186 - 102 = 84
