Ok - order of operations. Let's see

x+(x+1)+[(x+1)+2]=12 ; do the inner most () first
x+(x+1)+[x+3]=12 ; now we can start to combine
3x + 4 =12 ; good - let's subtract 4
3x = 8 ; almost there, divide by 3
x = 8/3 or 2 2/3 ; YES!

Always check:

8/3 + (8/3+1)+[(8/3+1) +2] =12 ??
8/3 + 3 2/3 + 5 2/3 = 12??
2 2/3 + 9 1/3 = 12??
12=12 YES!!

Hope this helps.
