can you stay out of jail if your lawyer appeals it?

It is up to the judge. Bond can be set, and the sentenced stayed pending appeal. Other times, I have seen Judges just take them in and let the appeal go down with the defendant in custody.

The worse the crime, the less likely the stay pending the appeal.

Many times yes, if you post an appeal bond.

no when your sentenced generally you are taken to jail right then
all judges are different though

depends if they are in jail awating trial or sentencing?
If they are bondable or not, if not they stay in Jail
