I've been in other Metropolitan cities where I didn't feel safe in the DAYTIME. San Diego is a very safe, clean place....just don't go wandering down dark streets, or anyplace that looks like you'd just be inviting someone to mug you!

Downtown San Diego is awesome! I'm a woman, a San Diego native, and I used to work downtown for many years. I feel perfectly safe walking down any of the main business streets alone during the day.
You will see homeless types here and there, but they generally leave you alone, or if not they just ask for a handout.
A lot of tourists visit Seaport Village, so if you start your walking adventure from there, you could walk north along the waterfront (called the Embarcardero) and visit the Midway or the the Star of India. Then, head east along Broadway, which is a primary business street with lots of storefronts and business people to keep you company. If you walk on the southside of Broadway, you will pass the San Diego tourist information center, in case you have any questions.
After about 10-11 blocks, Broadway will bring you to Horton Plaza (on your right) which is both a small urban park and a large urban shopping center. Check out the shopping center, but avoid the park as it has been reclaimed by the homeless.
Just to the east of Horton Plaza, on 4th street and several other streets surrounding it, is the famous Gaslamp Quarter area. This is very populated during the day and during the night, as there are many restaurants and bars in the area. If you are in the Gaslamp area at night, just stay in the busy populated areas so you don't get caught off-guard on a darker side street.
Walking south on 4th or 5th street and then a couple of blocks to the east on J or K streets will bring you to the fastest growing area of downtown. There is a brand new ballpark (Petco) and you can see urban revitilization up close and personal.
Back on 5th again, you could continue south to Harbor drive and walk westward again. This area passes by a pretty urban park (on your right-hand side) and you can see the flashy waterfront hotels (on the left), and soon you will have arrived back at Seaport Village having completed a clockwise circle through downtown San Diego.

Downtown San Diego is very safe, very tourist friendly city. I would do all the things good tourist do.... stay in lighted areas, go where other tourist go, know the route before hand, dress nicely but not to flashy, and have a wonderful time.

I moved to San Diego from Michigan 3 months ago. Some people are going to tell you this area isn't safe or that area isn't safe.... I have been all over the world including Detroit which doesn't have the best reputation but is a wonderful place. You know right away if someplace isn't safe.

I love San Diego. I miss my hometown and all but I love San Diego.

The one piece of advice as a tourist I always take is to trust your gut. I read an article once where a researcher interviewed hundreds of rape victims. (not date rape, but from strangers) Almost all of them had a strange feeling before it happened but blew it off and said nothing. I always listen to my gut. A couple of years ago I got a horrible feeling on a subway in Boston. I found a cop. The guy who I thought was following my party quickly left. ( I hope it doesn't sound like I am saying the rape could have been prevented I wasn't trying to say that only to listen to your gut whenever you can. I have no problem bothering security guards and cops if it keeps me safe.)

Obey that feeling.

I take my small children pretty much anyplace in SD. Zoo, Sea World, pier, gaslight district, park by the bay, Padres game.

Just look around and be alert. San Diego is a great friendly town. And if it is "bad" part of town there is nothing there so you wouldn't be going there anyway.

gotta go parent. good luck.

http://www.balboapark.org/ a cool place to go

everyday in SD is a blast. ask follow up questions.

i'm a photographer who bypass down there each and every of the time. i think fairly secure downthere. save on with the suggestion of alternative posters. bypass the place there are a number of people. while you're overly paranoid, then walk around the huge-unfold area of Downtown inclusive of Seaport village, the halfway provider, etc... there are a number of protection guards around in those areas to maintain peace. have relaxing!

I think it's very safe. Ever since the ballpark opened, it is all cleaned up and full of good people. Everything is pretty expensive, so I haven't seen much for bums or prostitutes like they used to have.
