I have a cacti garden planted in a self-watering container. They did alright for awhile, but now they are developing white spots where the spikes come out of the cactus and they are dying.

it sounds like aphids wipe them clean with Qtips and make sure you don't water cacti until it has completely dried out.

It sounds like they are suffering from too much water. You should water sparingly, maybe once or twice a month. The white spots are a mold and should be treated with a fungicide. Make sure the container they are in has good drainage. You might also invest in a bag of soil made especially for cacti which is made by Scotts I believe. This type of soil does not retain moisture and suits cacti well. I speak from experience and have several cacti that are nearly 10 years old.

White Spots On Cactus

The sole of a horses hoof will exfoliate, similar to the way our skin will peel. It is the horses natural way of trimming their own feet. Unfortunately most horse owners do not have the necessary space for the animal to move to completely trim their own feet. Don't worry about this as it is normal unless the spot is slimy or the horse jumps when you mess with it. Also as a little side note, thrushbuster is a good product for treating thrush, however it can get costly. A much cheaper solution to this is bleach water in a spray bottle. It will do the same thing without harming the hoof at all.

Your description sounds like powdery mildew. Not good news for your cacti.

You're drowning them with the "self watering" set up. Cactus grow in the desert, where it seldom rains. . . require little or no water.

I have one on my desk, it has white spots on it due to the new thorns coming out, which are white. If it does not look like new growth. It might be something else.
