What is he trying to cover up by removing key statements from the transcript surrounding his 'phony soldiers' comments?

PFO: It looks really suspicious when all eyes are on you, and you alter the evidence to suit your argument.

Rush screwed up and is now in damage control. He should have simply said that "Yes I called all current US Soldiers who do not support this war 'phony soldiers'. I regret I made this comment and I apology to all US service men and women."
If Rush had done this the issue would be over and done with and we could move on to more important matters. But then Rush is an egotistical maniac and would never allow himself to admit he screwed up.

I read the transcript from Media Matters, which is supposedly the unaltered one. I find no conflict of it. Rush's modification clarifies his position, but both could mean the same thing. The original was ambiguous, but doesn't clearly state that Rush believes all soldiers who criticize the war are phony.

From Media Matters:

CALLER 2: No, it's not, and what's really funny is, they never talk to real soldiers. They like to pull these soldiers that come up out of the blue and talk to the media.

LIMBAUGH: The phony soldiers.

CALLER 2: The phony soldiers. If you talk to a real soldier, they are proud to serve. They want to be over in Iraq. They understand their sacrifice, and they're willing to sacrifice for their country.

The caller implies that real soldiers support the war. He then suggests that the media cherry picks the ones it talks to. Rush then calls those soldiers phony, an accurate term. The caller goes on to say only real soldiers care about the mission. Rush never said that.

The sooner people realize that saying stuff like that makes radio gold, and just boosted his publicity, and gets him the the mainstream nightly news for the past two weeks, the sooner they realize that he is just as much of a shock jock as opie and anthony, or stearn. The guy tries to make us mad and when it works the more money for him.
