like others said, open up the roller, clean the contact points by atleast slightly wet wipes or a little bit alcohol on a table clothe. clean the ball and the roller inside the slot.. or better yet, buy an optical mouse.. it is better by far.. :)

It time to do some cleaning, your mouse contacts points could dirty and sticky. You will notice that circling your mouse ball is a removable disc, follow the arrow to unlock the disc, usually anti clockwise direction.Take out the ball, clean it.Next use a moist(not dripping wet)cotton swap and gently clean all the contact points inside the mouse.Reinstall the ball and lock disc.
I personally suggest you switch to using optical mouse,it is more reliable and maintenance free and doesn't need a mouse pad.

the simple way to get rid of this problem is that you have to rub the mouse ball by a smooth cotton cloth and then observe the working. I think that it is going to work. Or see that wether the mouse pad you are using is a smoother one or not.

your mouse ball is dirty!!! check the back of your mouse, look for the arrows, twist the cover so it will open and your ball will drop out, check the black rollers on the side, if they are not black they are dirty , clean them of place them back and viola, it will beok. better, buy a new one, those mouse with laser things on them are nice, they don't need cleaning!

maybe you need a new mouse pad. i bought a real cheap one once and my mouse would'nt run over it either, so i went to radio shack and bought a better one. good luck.

Take it out and clean off the rollers where the ball was. They might be gunked up with dirt.
