I have watched this joke all my life and it seems to me the only ones punished by this is the very people it is supposed to help.
Cuba has been under an embargo of US trade since 196-what and Fidel has never missed a thing and he is still there.
The only reason to maintain it is the large Cuban vote.
Look at all the times countries have been sanctioned by the entire world through theUN,(supposedly).
All that ever happens is it creates a black market for China, Russia, France and others to make MORE money off these items than they could under normal trade.
Then what ever REGIME is in power takes the goods that are allowed in and only the privaliged get food medicine or fuel While the likes of Jimmy Carter beg for more time.
What for so maybe all the lower class people will die so only his dictator friends are left.
I picked Carter as an example.

What do you think?

It works if your objective it is to isolate and punish a hole country, which means maybe millions of people for only one dictator and his crew.
to get a rid of fidel it's need only one sniper. to get a rid of sadam it was needed as well one sniper and not almost 4000 US lives and punish about 400000 Iraqis.

It's true, they rarely work. Those countries facing sanctions will still look to import banned goods, probably through black markets as you suggest. Saddam had very strict sanctions, but that didn't stop him from turning 'Oil for Food' into 'Oil for Weapons', with the help of Kofi Annan's son no less (what a great organization that UN is...).

Currently, sanctions and embargoes are buying time for Iran to develop nuclear weapons, an unwise course indeed.

The trade embargo we have with Cuba is a non-issue when discussing the quality of life in Cuba. Cuba currently sucks because of the tyrannical government. Our embargo does not prevent every other country on earth from doing business with Cuba. The same conditions always exist whenever Communism or socialism is in control.

Do embargoes work? Sure, but they can only do so much.

Yes, they do, all the time, fact is, when such pressure is applied, a regime is not maximizing their worth, and, generally, alter some aspect of their policy to accomodate change.

They are not used to topple a regime, but rather, to alter a regime's path...
