Of course there is an answer, in evolution there has to be a 'first' in this case, as all other cases the 'first' of the species emerges from the egg. Thence to found a 'new species (of chicken).

If you are a fundamentalist christian the only answer is the chicken since according to Genesis god created all the creatures in their adult state.
If you are rational, then the answer is the egg, laid by a bird very much like a modern chicken. Virtually indistinguishable. That is the answer provided by evolutionary theory and every reputable scientist on earth accepts it.

Being as believer in Darwin, I would have to go to the evolutionary standpoint. The chicken would have evolved from a lesser lifeform, but the style of birth probably would not have changed. This being true, the lesser form would have probably laid eggs as well.
Therefore, the egg must have came first.

Neither- there is scientific evidence to support the hypothesis that dinosaurs evolved into birds, and that the chicken in particular is believed to have descended from the Tyrannosaurus Rex, so really what came first is dinosaurs.
