.....kicked a blind father of five to death have both been jailed for just 12 and a half years ?

(According to press reports, Lewis Barlow and Leon Gray who were 14 at the time of the attack, knocked 45-year-old Colin Greenwood to the ground then kicked and punched him to death 'for fun' as he waited at a tram stop. They were then seen walking off laughing and boasting about the brutal beating before joking about what sentence they would be given).

Do you think 12 and a half years in jail is enough for this callous act? What sentence would you impose?

Blame the judges and the goody goody social workers and PC brigade for the mess - they should have been locked up for life - and I mean LIFE - no release - no parole - nothing - they only leave in a wooden box when their lives are over

If someone takes a life then they should be jailed for life I say.

What I would like to know is why they committed such a barbaric act, were they influenced by something they have seen on television or other media sources, games, music, videos, or schooling?????

Reason why I say schooling is because my 13 year old niece had reading list from school where she had to pick one book to read and all involved runaways, drug addiction, prostitution and violence, in fact one was called 'Boy Kills Man' and the title said it all! I looked up contents of each book and all were pretty graphic to say the least!

Those sick little ***** should spend the rest of their lives locked up in a 10' x 10' cell with a man called Horse who's been hankering for some "intimacy" for the last 5 years. They should only come out of prison in a wooden box.

I am SICK of reading these awful stories. What the **** is wrong with these evil little psychos?! My God I'm only 35 but I don't remember kids of my generation doing anything so ******* sick! Yes we got up to mischief but this is just evil, Those kids are sick in the head.

The little bastards will have a whale of time in a YOI - playing computer games, watching TV, going on "Adventure Holidays", its more like Butlins than a bloody prison. They will be out in 2 years with fake IDs to enjoy the sort of life the took away from their victim and his family.

I'm sorry for all the **'s but this just makes me so angry!!!

Interesting aspect of human nature:
If you threaten extreme punishments for an act, people will obey to avoid the punishment, but internally they will know it is only because of the threat. This means they are more likely to commit the act when they are sure they won't get caught.
A light punishment threat, however, causes dissonance - they want to perform the act, but they don't even though the punishment is only light. This causes the idea that the act is wrong to be internalized, and they won't do it, ever.
But at the same time, acts like this need to have appropriate consequences, so what are you going to do?
Another interesting aspect is that, when considering misbehavior by others, people tend to over-estimate the degree to which the behavior occurs due to character flaws, and when looking at their own problems over-estimate environmental pressures.

I hate to say it, but I am begining to think we ought to reintroduce the death penalty. There have been far too many lives taken recently in the same sort of form as these two and there is no deterrent - 12 1/2 years certainly isn't one, especially when you consider that they could be released in around 8 years. Not enough for the taking of a life.

Death. Why? Because it suites the crime. I could debate this topic for hours with people. Outside influence is irrelevant, we all know that taking another life is wrong, bottom line. There are people that are getting stoned to death for loving the wrong person, so what's backwards here? If this continues and this world continues to tail spin and the laws and rule makers keep failing to uphold justice for what is happening to innocent people and their families people will start to take matters into there own hands.

I know, it sickens me! I really think prison should be a place people fear. Not a youth camp as most YOI's are. The worst punishment they will get is having the playstation taken away!!

Oh and on another note. I loved your answer to 'why dont the French like America and back us up etc!! Intelligent, well written and true!!

I would impose a life sentence. Prisons aren't hard enough for killers and rapists these days. If i was in charge I would make prison harder for these terrible criminals.

12 and a half years is not enough.

Take a life and you forfeit your's, whether that be spending the remainder of your life in a prison or otherwise.

Put them in one of the most violent prisons in England, and let them get beat up for the rest of their lives. These 'people' (I mean miserable wastes of space) really get to me, because they obviously are the scrapings of the barrel. I feel sorry for the parents, because if I was related to those two thugs, I'd disown them and be ashamed and embarrassed to have even been associated with them.

I think that their sentence should be being sent to my house and the police ignoring the results. People like that deserve to walk away missing a few body parts so that they can never commit the same crime.
