Not sure what you are asking. Do you want to know how a person can determine if it's a river or highway?

You can usually tell the rivers on a map by the name and a dark line. The flow of rivers is determined by the elevation, from higher to lower. You should be able to see that on a physical map. The legend or the key on the map will tell you the meanings of eh various colors and symbols.
