Use a flame retardant sealant on the wood. But I'd still stick to a good ol water heater grill.

Are you looking to build a GRATING ? A wood grate to protect your feet from mud / water ?

As I recall, it takes two "boards" that are then routed to form a crossing lattice-work.

I hope someone can find you actual directions
