Hi.

Hazel trees are usually grown as a coppiced shrub where the 8yr old wood is cut down to the ground and allowed to re-grow. It seems to respond really well to this treatment and may be the answer to your fruiting problems.

If it's small enough to tackle safely I'd be brave and take it down to allow new growth to take over. If this seems a little daunting then it would be wise to get a professional tree surgeon to do it for you. Get a few prices first though.

If you want to read a bit more about coppicing and the Hazel (Corylus avellana) tree then perhaps the links below might help.

Hope that helps.

have you tried pruning the larger tree, maybe all the goodness/energy is going towards growing instead of into producing nuts (we have a twisted hazel which is growing in a large tub in our back yard, it produced nuts for the 1st time this year)

Each tree carries both male and female catkins, try taking out some of the older wood of the other tree
