The speed of light is defined as 299,792,458 m/s (187,370.29 miles per second).
The year used is the "average Gregorian year" of 365.2425 days, each day being defined as 86,400 seconds.
One light year (in statute miles) =
187,370.29 times 365.2425 times 86,400
approximately 5.9128x10^12 miles
almost 6 million million miles
(in USA and a few other countries using the short scale, this is called a trillion; elsewhere, it is called a billion).

Light travels at approximately 186000 miles per second, so in a year that would be:
186000 x 60 (seconds) x 60 (minutes) x 24 (hours) x 365 (days).
My calculator doesn't have enough spaces to do the sum!

Take the distance light travels in one second: 186,282.4 miles.
Multiply by 60 seconds, by 60 minutes, by 24 hours, by 365.25 days, and you get:
186282.4 X 60 X 60 X 24 X 365.25 = 5878625466240 miles.

almost 6 trillion miles, and it has nothing to do with short scale like raymond said.
short scale is the common way to say it, the other way to say a trillion is a million million, not very popular. so dont listen to raymond about that, a billion and a trillion arent the same thing.
