Am I presenting myself as I really am when I use spell check? I am presenting my self as sunny. I don't know what gave me that idea when my real name is Beuregarde. I am a lousy speller and I talk with a cockney accent. My IQ is about 10 below and yet for some reason I am trying to make a good impression. Why am I doing that? and how many of you are really like me? I have nothing to gain except being corrected and making other people feel good. Should people present themselves as they really are?

There's nothing wrong with using a spell check. The technology is there so you should use it. You've demonstrated the intelligence by choosing to use the spell check in the first place.

There's also nothing wrong with a regional accent. I speak with a strong Geordie accent, and I've no plans to change that.

IQ doesn't matter that much. I've just answered a question on here from a guy who graduated University two years ago and he could barely write in English, and certainly not as clearly as your question.

There's nothing wrong with making a good impression and striving to be a better person - your IQ can go up with the right experience and exposure to knowledge.

Keep pushing....

p.s. Spell check isn't just for spelling errors - it's also for typing errors (there's a fine line between the two).

I know how to spell declare, but I nearly always type it in wrong.

It can make us a little better or worse, depends if we actually learn to spell correct when using the spell check. Some people just check and fix and not see how the word is actually spelled to know how the next time. It the same with calculators. I remember many years ago I learned the manual approach for finding the square root of a number. Over time I forgot how I did this. Now I ask a College Math Teacher how this was done. He said; "Well, I know there is a way, but, I not remember"! :-D

Well, Beauregarde, Spellcheck will make sure you haven't dropped the "h's" from any words. When your written thoughts are spelled correctly your thoughts are clearly expressed and sometimes people may think you are smarter than you think you are. It's true of course that a person who writes clearly and correctly makes a good impression on his reader. I like you fine which is what you want people to do when you strive to make a good impression. People should always put their best face forward, even if it's wearing lipstick.

You are wise. In English, sometimes an incorrect spelling can give a completely different meaning to what you intend. This is also true of punctuation. If you are specifically referring to Yahoo answers, I think you are more likely to get sensible replies if you are literate. The fact you want to make a good impression says a lot about you. Good luck!

Spell check is useful if you learn from it. If you write a paragraph and spell check prompts you to change some of your words, then pay attention to the mistakes so that you don't make them again.

When writing, you should use the best grammar, sentence structure and spelling as you can. Not only does it make your communication easier to understand, but it also makes the reader want to continue his/her perusal. So if you have some devises for checking these elements, by all means use them.

We all want to give a good impression. Spell check is helpful if you want to communicate facts clearly. Why would anyone want to pass the information that they can't spell? - Spelling can be a problem for very intelligent people.

Spell check allows you to communicate better so long as you are careful that you are not misspelling a word with a properly spelt but inapropriate word e.g. confusing to,too, two. Other tools have other dangers e.g. students who use an online Thesaurus and randomly pick words that they think make their work look clever, but dont if they dont understand the change in sense that has happened. I dont think you should worry about being false, it's just saving others brain-ache reading your text.

There is nothing wrong with using spell check. You are presenting yourself through your written literature. That's the important thing. Just because your spelling is accurate, doesn't mean what your trying to put across is.
