Unix came first. Before Linux or Windows or Mac.

Its more stable, and more powerful. But it has very few "toys". I recommend it whenever a company wants a really large server that can do standard internet services and run for years and years with very little attention.

Linux I recommend for companies that are just getting onto the internet and want to start a server, and have some fun doing it.

Unix was an operating system created in the 70's by Bell Labs and then over the next three decades branched into FreeBSD, Darwin, Xenix and System III & V. It has a set of standards that need to be met in order for an operating system to be called Unix. FreeBSD was University of California Berkeley's Unix. Darwin is Mac Os's Unix, Xenix is SCO/Microsoft's Unix, and System III and V are IBM and HP's Proprietary Unix.

Linux came on the scene in 1991 when Linus Torvalds designed the Linux Kernel after learning about Kernel from Minux a version of Unix with a microkernel. Linux is a Monolithic kernel though. Linux was distributed freely over the internet and people could use it to create their own distro's based on the kernel. Linux has evolved further from Unix though with a lot more support for hardware.

Check all this out on wikipedia if you want more info.

Given you require references and are asking for people to "plz hurry", I am guessing you need this for a school assignment.

The easiest answer that will lead you to other resources is to check Wikipedia for both operating systems. You'll find plenty of information there and links to other reference that you can follow up on.

The one bit of information I'll freely give is that Linux (as well as Microsoft) has pushed UNIX vendors to improve their operating systems. You can also see situations where UNIX vendors are even following a Linux like open development environment (find some info on OpenSolaris).

** Edit **
sargenthp - While historically UNIX companies required proprietary hardware, some are starting to realize that business model isn't working for all customers. For example, Sun offers Solaris x86 for use on standard PC hardware. Sun even offers high end AMD based systems with the Solaris x86 OS. I had also recently read where IBM is looking to ship some of their servers with an option for Solaris as an OS.

UNIX vendors need to realize that they can't just sit back and say they are better just because they run on proprietary hardware (Sun was always known for having highly reliable systems...well maybe a few glitches here and there). Commodity hardware with failover/redundancy/load balancing has changed the situation.

** Edit 2 **
Waldo - Discounting a few of your statements:
- Linux does not run everything UNIX does, at least not without compiling for the Linux platform.
- Linux itself is free but that doesn't mean the entire OS around Linux is free. For example, RedHat starts at $80 for their Linux version (link below). They do offer a free product called Fedora Core, but you don't get all the add-ons that makes Linux convenient.
- UNIX vendors are starting to change their business model. With Sun Solaris, you can now get their Solaris 10 (SPARC or x86 versions) for free. What they are trying to do is get it used in more locations and they charge for support options.
- Speed comparisons can be difficult to measure unless you narrow down to specific benchmark situations. Each operating system and hardware configuration doesn't meet every single user requirement or we'd only see one vendor around.

Linux is a spin off of UNIX.

- Linux you can run it on pretty much any platform, where UNIX it is dependent on the hardware... Pretty much like Mac. HP-UX can only run on HP servers, AIX can only run on IBM servers, etc.

- Linux is actively being updated and improved. Most UNIX flavors a being just maintained.

- Latest news article that I read said that companies are looking to stop writing new code for UNIX, and just to continue writing code for Linux after 2008.

Want to try Linux without actually installing it? I recommend downloading Ubuntu. You can boot off the CD and Linux usually starts up. I say "usually" because there are a few systems that I've seen that do not work (Like my laptop - HP DV9000) without some tweaking.

Linux is a free, open-source alternative to UNIX. Linux was built around UNIX code, but no part of UNIX can be found in Linux. Anything that runs on UNIX runs on Linux.

If you are looking into using one of these operating systems, use Linux. It is free, unlike UNIX. I do not know about speed comparisons, but I think that Linux probably wins. No guarantees, though.

Linux is free and is opensouce so that anyone can make changes to the OS....

UNIX is a flavor meaning that a company developed their own version and marketed it.....

example

Solaris is SUN Mirco Systems version and is very high end....

You can't make changes to the source code....

Other than that, they are idenitcal in configuring and operating....

A popular version of linux is redhat
