Well I love Route 66 and drive it all the time and there are TONS of drivable miles still left almost about 1800 of them. With that said you might find this interesting about the ending point of 66:
U.S. Route 66, (also known as Route 66, The Main Street of America, The Mother Road and the Will Rogers Highway[1]) was a highway in the U.S. Highway system. One of the original federal routes, US 66 was established on November 11, 1926, though signs did not go up until the following year.[2] It originally ran from Chicago, Illinois, through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California, before ending at Los Angeles for a total of 2,448 miles[3] (3,940 km).
Route 66 underwent many improvements and realignments over its lifetime that changed its overall length. One of these realignments moved the western endpoint from downtown Los Angeles to Santa Monica. Contrary to common belief, Route 66 never ran to the coast; it terminated onto what was at the time US-101 ALT, at what is today the intersection of Olympic Boulevard and Lincoln Boulevard (a segment of California State Route 1). It never went to the intersection of Ocean Boulevard and Santa Monica Boulevard, even though there is a plaque dedicating Route 66 as the Will Rogers Highway there.[4]
See it technically ended in LA; it is true it never really went to the pier, and well the pier sits off of 101. Most people though do go to the pier to end their trip, I know I do. If you are interested in Route 66 here are some sites I use to plan my road trips on it:

I hope this helps you, oh in case you were also wondering it starts in Chicago, right by Buckingham Fountain. However there are several alignments of 66 starting back to before it was named 66. So depending what alignment you are looking at (27, 37, 43, 70 something) you will get different answers for starting and ending points. Good Luck!

Well, technically speaking, it ended on June 27, 1985. It exists no longer. U.S. Highway 66 was decommissioned on that date.
In its heyday, it ran from Chicago, Illinois to Santa Monica, California. It once ended in Los Angeles (as noted in the song "(Get Your Kicks On) Route 66"), but the route was extended to Santa Monica in 1939. Over the years, especially in the 1970s, the route was progressively truncated until it existed no longer.
However, many sections of the road do still exist, and are signed as "Historic U.S. 66." It's a fun ride, if I do say so myself.
Most states have a State Route 66, and there is also an Interstate 66, currently serving northern Virginia and the District of Columbia.

Starts in Chicago, IL ends in Santa Monica, CA. Most of the great road has fallen into disrepair or been replaced by the interstate highway system. Rt 66 doesn't really exist anymore.
