do you know if mom & dad like the idea of a diaper party? While that is a good idea.... they may still need more than that for the new baby. Afterall, they will want some clothes, bottles, pacifiers, bedding, toiletries, nursery decor, etc.
I think that EVERY baby should be celebrated with a full-fledged shower. There is nothing wrong with the parents filling out a registry of what the will need for the new baby. They will know what they need and what they don't.
The down side of a diaper party is if the baby happens to get a rash from a certain brand, or grows out of a size too fast, you might get stuck with lots of unused diapers and/or no place to store them all.

Have your friend register at target or somewhere like that and only register for diapers of all sizes. They will get the hint. On the invitation call it a diaper shower instead of baby shower.

We did a "diaper shower" and noted on the invitation. This is common.
We're having a party for our favorite couple, you see Marla and Bill are having number three! Bring only necessities, for they have plenty of toys We hope you can come and share in their joy! A Couples Baby Shower
This would be one example

I would call it a Welcome Home Party for ____ (insert child's name or just say "baby." There isn't really a real polite way to ask for certain gifts on the invitation, but whoever is handling the R.S.V.P's can hint what she needs for the baby. As far as close family members and such, you could write what she needs on a separate little note, handed out with the invitation... but as far as friends go, I would just let them buy what they want and let her exchange the things she doesn't need.
