The A/C are our house has been going out off and on over the last week or so. One night, about a week ago, The A/C kicked on for about two seconds, then turned off for about one or two seconds, then came back on and ran normally for a few minutes. Woke up the next morning and it was not running. Later the next afternoon, we turned it back on and it started to run normally. It ran fine for a couple of days, and then stopped working again. A couple of days later, I turned it back on and it started running fine again. Then last night, it was running normally, then shut off again for one or two seconds and kicked back on for a few more minutes. When I heard that, I thought it might have gone out again. Sure enough, it wouldn't come back on anymore, and wouldn't come on this morning either. Any idea as to what could be going on? It seems to cool fine when it will run, but it keeps going out on us.

Thanks!

Most above answers are good...I would also check the Capacitor...if it looks bulged, it may be kicking the outside fan off and on, causing a thermo overload of the compressor....turn unit on, check fan outside...if it kicks off right away....but you still hear the compressor running...this could also be the problem, and is an easy fix.

They may be a couple reasons, the first might be that the thermal overload on the compressor is getting hot and shutting of the A/c. This is done for safety reason and keeps the compressor form burning up.
If this is the problem then a serviceman can replace the faulty thermal overload, the other possibility is that the thermostat might be acting up or going bad, or its possible that there is a loose electrical connection.
If you turn off the power to the furnace and the A/C unit you could go out and check the wire nuts that hold the wires together and make sure there isn't a loose connection. So this also to the thermostat wires at the A/C unit and at the furnace.
If you don't find a loose connection the I would suggest calling a Serviceman to find the problem.
There are just to many variables that would need to be checked, and I can't list them all here and it would be beyond explanation without you having a prior background in electrical and HVAC.
Good Luck!

You didn't say if it was a central air unit or window unit. If it's a window unit...more than likely it the themostat. If it's a central unit...it could be the small wire ( look like small telephone wires ) that run from Thermostat on wall inside house to unit outside. It is usually the wires outside have a break in them. next time it is off wiggle those wires around and see if it kicks back on. If so....chack for bad spots and repair. NOTE...its bad for an A/C to turn on..then kick off...then turn on again in a few seconds. Its really bad on the compressor for this to happen. Get it fix before you need to replace everything.

There is a short in the low voltage circuit between yellow and red, probably in the wirenut on the unit. Check all low voltage connection at the outdoor unit. Or there is a short in the thermostat. No matter it is a short between red and yellow.Or the contactor is bad and dropping out. This pulls in the contactor on 1 leg to energise the 220v.

it could be either the refrigerant is low in the system or if your trying to run the air and it gets below 60 degrees outside, or lower depending on your units settings, then your air conditioner will not run. it is a safety feature so the unit doesn't freeze up.

You need a step by step troubleshooting guide. You could call a repairman but it might work while they were there and you would still have to pay. You can find the guide at the air conditioner page at my source.

everybody is right.. The best thing to do is call a service tech. it also could be a motor problem. Motor is over heating and shouting its self off. good luck.

If I were you, I'd fix it. If you don;t know how to do that, then call someone that does.
