Hi,
1) Get you a tape measurer and measure the length and width of the room. Record the feet and inches for each dimension. If the room has small nooks and cranies, measure them the same way to the extent possible.
2) Convert the inches into a decimal by dividing the inches by 12. For example, 3 inches = 3/12 = .25 feet. You can do this with just about any calculator.
3) Once you have all of the dimensions, multiply the length times the width of each of the parts of the room. (If it's rectangular or square with no nooks or crannies; then you need only multiply length times width once.) That will give you the number of square feet.
4) If you have more than one shape that you measured, add up the square feet of all of them all up once you've multiplied the lengths times the widths.

Hope this helps.

Length times width, or break it down to smaller chunks if you have to and add up the results.
