What is general feeling about this in the South? I'm really just curious because being from the North, I only get one view point about this. I am interested in learning about what people in other parts of the country believe.

Slavery issue asside: I think that the South had every right to resign from the U.S. and in hindsight, I don't think that the loss of life was worth the preservation of the Union. However, at the time, noone knew how long the war would last.

EVERY DAY is Southerners day for me :o)
There's a lot of people who wish the South had won, but it doesn't come up in daily conversation, as a whole. With the influx of so many people from different areas, it's hard to find majority Southern natives in the larger cities. I'm in North Carolina, and do volunteer work for living history (relating to the War Between the States). The people I volunteer with discuss this at length, but it is a group of people with the same common interest. (And yes, we wish the South had won. We would have been more prosperous in regulating our own economy without the Feds overtaxing). Today, our biggest goal is preserving our heritage, which the government is slowly taking away from us. Our historical monuments, flags (and there were many-not just the one so many find "offensive") are being taken down by various governmental agencies. We want people to have a better understanding of the war & the lifestyles/effects on the Southerners during this time. My own ancestors experienced many losses during the plundering, fires, and ruining of crops(also theft of livestock).
We also acknowledge the Union, as there were so many lives lost on both sides. We're not "yankee haters", we're history buffs. We can't change history, but we can have a better understanding of how it came about. History does repeat itself eventually, one way or another.

I moved down from the north to the deep south 6 years ago. I really don't think people still think about the Civil War, maybe old timers, definitely not younger people. When I first moved I had a heavy northern accent and people would know right away I was from up north. I was teased some about being a Yankee, but it was all in good fun. The only one that calls me a Yankee now is my husband, it's just a joke. My heavy accent has faded, so people don't even notice it. Only a couple of times has the Civil War even come up in conversation, and it was in a general talk about history. Maybe it is just the area that I moved to, but I don't think that it is an issue anymore. Or maybe if it is they wouldn't discuss it with me since I am a Yankee? Ha ha

Yes there are, but that is not all. There are 25 states that currently have active secessionist organizations. With only about 18% of Americans happy with the job their governmnet is doing, an unarmed invasion from South America and Mexico happening, the elimination of the middle class in the USA, and state and local governments acting in defiance of federal laws,I think we are on the verge of a major crisis. Perhaps Rome is burning and the emperor is busy fightin' terrer'.

No. I'm from the south. I'm against slavery. There's nothing right about it.
