The central character is inadequate as a fictional moral-ethical central character worth watching. Charles Foster Kane--an allegorical attempt to assess William Randolph Hearst's wish to control better people's mind--is portrayed aa an intelligent but categorically-flawed cynic who exploits people, sells out for popularity and loses everything worth having because he tries to influence people and collect objects instead of telling them the truth.
he is a man without priorities--except dictatorial control over others. The film, like Casablanca, is very overrated. It is intelligent, cheaply made but well-directed, and has a good cast. Its chief claim to fame is its overlapping voices, the first time that was ever done in Hollywood and its "big" look.

I watched it in a film study class. I thought it was a little slow but with the discussion that goes along with a film study class made it more interesting. I would suggest looking up a film analysis of the movie after watching it.

A clean print of Kane is breathtaking. Welles and Joseph Cotten are outstanding. It's definitely a "Top 10" American film.

I would agree that discussing it afterwards makes it a more impacting experience.

What I marveled at was the technical achievements the movie made in terms of depth of field, cinematography,a nd sound design.

All this by one man who wrote, directed, produced, and starred at age 25. Amazing!

One of the great movies. It helps to read a little background about the movie to get a sense of what its about and the time it takes place.
