You can Google for free anti-virus software, and get a number of hits. Be aware that some of the hits are free TRIALS only.
My personal recommendation for truly free software is AVG from www.grisoft.com. It updates automatically, and has proven to be very reliable.

I have used two different free virus scanners over the years and find them both to be excellent. The first one is AVG with the link of http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/ Avg has been around for years and although they announced they were going to shut down the free version well over a year ago, they have not. Works well and has continuous updates.
The other virus scanner is Avast with the link of http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html Avast if a good scanner but a bit slower than AVG.
Read about both of them and go from there.
Good luck,
Z

I have used AVG Free edition for years and have just installed the newest on my Vista Laptop. It will even scan my Outlook, Outlook express or WinMail email on the machines I utilize.

While you are at it, here are some other tips to owning an XP machine....
What you can do. Windows XP comes with 3 items built in that I recommend running at least once a month with a "house keeping" routine.
1) Check Disk - double click my computer, right click C: drive left click properties, go to the Tools tab, click the Check Now button, check both check boxes, click start and say ok to the prompt on the screen. Restart your computer and leave it go until that last part of the check disk runs. You will know when you finally get to the desktop or net login.
2) Disk Defragmenter - Start->Programs->Accessories->... Tools
3) Disk Cleanup - Start->Programs->Accessories->... Tools
Now here are some you can download for free online that will help clean some background garbage out. Be careful with Easy Cleaner by Toni Arts though.
1) Adaware SE - http://www.snapfiles.com/get/adaware.htm...
2) Spybot S&D - http://www.snapfiles.com/get/spybot.html...
3) RegScrubXP - http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?d... (after clicking the link go to one of the Sites with the American Flag icons to download)
4) EasyCleaner - http://majorgeeks.com/download414.html... (after clicking the link go to one of the Sites with the American Flag icons to download)

AVG, Avast, and Avira AntiVir are all free. Avira is consistently rated the best of the three, but I personally have never had any luck with it (update issues.) AVG is the easist to use, but it has seriously fallen behind the pack in detection rates in recent years. That leaves Avast, which is only slightly behind Avira, but yards ahead of AVG. I recently settled on Avast myself.

AVG is free. Download at:
http://free-avg-download.com/
It is not as all-encompassing as the paid version and they tell you that.
Here, on weekends, we get ads from half-dozen computer stores with in-store specials. Of course they are designed to get you to the store, but I picked up a 3-license Norton 2007 for $9.99 - can't beat that!

I see the AVG fanboys and cheerleaders are out in full force again here on Yahoo Answers!
AVG Anti-Virus is crap!
Mostly noobs, the naive, the computer illiterate, and children use AVG Free. People of their ilk love AVG because they say it is easy to use and almost never bothers them with any pop-ups or warnings. Of course AVG Free never bothers them, it hardly ever finds any virus to warn them about!
In test,

after test,

after test,
http://techsupportalert.com/issues/al_current.htm#Section_0,
after test,
http://winnow.oitc.com/AntiVirusPerformance.html
etc. etc. etc, ad nauseam, AVG fares poorly.
AVG has proven itself to be a miserable performer at best. Missing almost 20%, while trying to detect known malware, in some tests. Not to mention almost non-existent heuristic detection and infrequent "once-a day" updates.
AVG. = Average, at best!
There are much better free anti-virus alternatives such as Avria Anti-Vir:
http://www.free-av.com/
and Avast:
