either one is fine to use in a home environment.

A hub and a network switch (or ethernet switch as you call it) are not capable of linking a LAN to an Internet source.
A hub is less intellegent than a switch. Switches now cost about the same as a hub. Most everyone uses switches in place of hubs as the "junction point" for all LAN devices.
A router interfaces with the Internet (router WAN port connects to Internet feed) and the LAN switch (router LAN port connects to switch). There are many different types of routers and the proper one to use depends upon your Internet feed type.
Small, low end, home style routers often integrate the switch and the router into one device offering 4 LAN ports in the switch - and many people find these devices suitable for a small home network because they have no more than 4 LAN devices anyway.
Now to answer your question - ONLY a router will link your LAN to an Internet source.

I use a Dlink Wireless G router in my house. I have my Desktop connected via patch cord and my laptop and my daughters laptop connected via Wireless connection. My signal strength is typically always Excellent with wireless. Most routers come with 4 ports to plug into so you can save your self some money by not buying a router and a switch. Even if you dont have wireless, I would get one anyways since you never know what may happen in the future. But if you do get wireless, make sure you set the WPA or WEP security so that noone in your neighborhood close to you piggybacks your internet service.

For several computers at home to share a DSL connection, you need a ROUTER that has ethernet ports and normally at a minimum it allows 3 hard-wired computers with ethernet cable and port to share the same line plus most likely the router has wireless capabilities.

This depend greatly on your Internet Service provider, If they only allow one PC to be assigned an IP address's then you will need to use a router.
A router is you best choose anyway, it offers you added security, and you can hook multiple computers to you Internet connection.
ISP's will not offer support for routers or home networks, so if you need help setting it up, you can contact me or post more questions on the site.
Switches are really not designed for home networks, even thought allot of people buy them these are designed for WAN's and should be used in conjunction with a radius and other equipment. A hub just simply allows you to connect a series of computers on a LAN together, it does not offer any routing of DHCP services to assign IP addresses.
So, just get a router. It's quick an simple to install.

I Use a router and other than splitting the internet up it also is good for WiFi Connections. Router is basically a Hub with more capabilties. I would go with that

A "router" and A "switch" are the best options because they send the packets back intelligently. A "hub" is a bad choice because it is the oldest technology, and is very simplistic in what you can do with it.
To rank them all:
1. Router
2. Switch
3. Hub (not recommended)

Thank the Lord GTB answered this question. I was going down the list reading the answers and pulling my hair out. Thanks to GTB I have a little left. People should not be answering questions they have no clue about. In Electronics, especially networking, a little bit of knowledge does not go along way.

actually the best is a third computer running red hat linux with 2 nic cards. very secure and pretty easy to set up and run, if you take the time to learn the networking basics in linux.
the kool part is = the protection you have against people who want to exploit your system. before they can get to your windows computer, they have to break through your linux.
Good Luck
