First, its been said in many wrestlers biographies in an indirect way that wwe is scripted. Thats why its classed as entertainment. The fights are highly choreographed - not that the takes away from the skill of watching the matches.
And John Cena is the kids hero - in the same way that Hulk Hogan and the Rock were so popular. McMahon is just giving the fans what the want. And the whole point of himm getting beaten up before he wins is that us fans just love an underdog.
There are wrestlers whos styles I prefer to Cena, and maybe it is time for a new champ, but I can handle sitting here thinking that smugly while my kids look up to what is a great sporting role model.

Yep he's the golden goose that sells the tickets the dvds tshirts etc & makes the dosh for Vince. Why else did Vince look so sad on ECW when he made the announcement lol??!!
He's an average wrestler with a limited moveset. But he has the mic skills & can work an audience & cut a promo. That it seems cuts more leeway than being a gifted wrestler like Jeff Hardy for instance.
The storyliners love him, kids & moms love him & the merchandise sellers love him.Everybody loves him except the wrestling fans who see him as the average grappler that he is.That;s why Cena held the title so long.

He gets one of the most intense reactions from the crowd. Ditto with Randy Orton.
Wrestling is a story of heroes and henchmen. You need somebody to be the top good guy & the top bad guy in order for the stories to be engrossing for a lot of viewers. It was only a brief period of time (the austin & nwo eras) where the top drawing characters existed in a grey area of morality. They looked like bad guys, but people liked them. This is just a return to the status quo in wrestling without a character that runs in the grey area and maintains popularity.
Wrestling has a long running standard of long term champions who are either really attractive or really reprehensible.
In addition, how much credibility does one gain by being champion if it only lasts pay per view to pay per view? What's to be one by switching hands every month? I say its an effort to make it a big deal when he's defeated.
Along with all of that stuff, John Cena works very hard backstage. He's very social backstage, always wanting to learn something from everyone he meets. That kind of unpretenciousness is rare among the great egos in the industry. When he can impress the brass, and the influencial talent (the ric flairs, etc) then you can go pretty far. Its shown in his character development over the past couple years. Picture him a few years ago & picture him now. The progress is deliberate & great.
As to wrestling being scripted, check out the congresional hearings on steroroid use in pro wrestling in the late 1980s. Wrestlers came out & said they used or were forced to take steroroids. Vince mac was vulnerable to all kinds of sports related federal charges, and as his defense he said in no uncertain terms that this is sports entertainment, not a sport, its scripted and not an athletic competition, and therefore the charges you're threatening me with would not be apporpriate to levy since they only apply to sporting competitions.
As far as his talent goes. Not many of the longstanding champions in the WWE have been highly talented when it comes to in ring moves. They've been gimick rich. Cena has 3 finishing moves and many in and out of the ring gimmicks. He has a wealth of in-ring moves. Compare him to hulk hogan on this point & cena looks like an olympic gold medalist.

John Cena is marketing very good right now. So it really
is about money. Movies, music, he is cleaning house.
But the tide is turning on him now. And Orton or the
Undertaker, and Triple H, will pick up the slack.
But Taker is still the biggest name in the WWE.

Ask those stupig wwe writers!Everytime he wanted to drop the belt(like before wrestlemania 23),Vince refused cuz his merchandise is on the top seller.Kids love their superman, which means their parents have to buy Cena's merchandise for them,so that's why Vince made Cena a superman by forcing him to keep the belt.

Uhm dude, McMahon himself has confirmed that it is scripted. Why do you think they call it sports ENTERTAINMENT. It's fun to watch, but if you still think the matches aren't predetermined, you're an idiot.
Cena was the champ for so long because they made good money with him in that position.

I think it had been planned for Cena to lose the belt for a long time, but everytime they thought they had the script figured out they had to rewrite it because of injuries and suspensions. I had read HHH was supposed to win it, but he got hurt at New Year's Revolution so that threw a monkey wrench in the script.

I think they wanted him to be the longest reigning champ of all time. He had another 6 years to go though. Bruno Sammartino had the belt for 7+ years straight.
