Eugene Cernan

Actually, there is a (friendly) rivalry between Gene Cernan and Jack Schmitt (the lunar module pilot) regarding which of them was the "last man" on the moon.

On Apollo 17, Cernan was the first one out of the LM, and the last one back in. Since he was the last person to _leave_ the surface, he maintains that he was the last man on the moon.

But if you count the order in which people first _set foot_ on the moon Cernan was number 11, and Schmitt was number 12. For that reason, Schmitt likes to say that HE was really the "last man" on the moon.

Gene Cernan he was the commander of Apollo 17.

He words as departing the moon were, "As we leave the Moon at Taurus-Littrow, we leave as we came, and God willing, as we shall return, with peace and hope for all mankind. As I take these last steps from the surface for some time to come, I'd just like to record that America's challenge of today has forged man's destiny of tomorrow. Godspeed the crew of Apollo Seventeen."
