I have the definative answer, since my husband and I have collected them from almost the beginning. We didn't start until 1966, when they came out with the tanker. The very first one was a 1964-65 . It features operating head and tail lights and a fillable cargo tank. A button at the rear of the cab controls the lights and the battery. The truck is painted in the old colors of dark green, white and yellow with bright red accents.

It was the late 60's early 70's - i dont exactally remember the year - my parents would get me one for Christmas every year.
I hate the fact i dont have any of the really old ones - my oldest one is from the early 80's to last years model.
They sure have changed since back then, besides being more expensive .
I think one of the first ones was actually a Hess tanker ship, and a couple others were a semi with a box trailer that contained a few 'oil' drums , i used to have the semi with the tanker trailer. The original Hess trucks are in red, yellow and green colors ( yellow fenders, green/white body and red chassis/rims). A few odd ones they made were firetrucks (2 types- a red one w/o a sound card and a white one with a sound card), a semi hauing a space shuttle and a large helicopter , to name a few.
