For the short term I would agree with the baking soda, but this is not a way to control ongoing heartburn.
You want to make a few dietary changes and perhaps add digestive enzymes before each meal.
Things to avoid would be anything with caffeine, white flour, anything that says ENRICHED (basically means, stripped of nutrients then tiny amounts added back)
Try to eat whole foods (fruits, vegetables) at every meal, reducing your meat intake to 4 - 6 ounces.
If there are any foods that you know your body is intollerant to, avoid them. Symptoms of heartburn is a sign that your digestive tract is compromised and it's your bodies way of asking you to help, please don't just mask the problems or you will end up with something more serious in the future that you could easily have dealt with now.

The baking soda thing works. But if you continue to get heartburn you should see a Doctor. I suffer from heartburn and I take PREVACID...1capsule every morning. No matter what I eat or drink I won't have any heartburn. P.S. I hope you feel better, I know what you are going through and it's no picnic.

This works for me and my kids everytime. Charcoal powder stirred into water or juice. It's bland tasting so kids like the juice.
But you do need to get to the bottom of why you have heartburn. If it only once in a while, fine. But if you're having more often you may need more (believe it or not) acid to help digest.
I have used a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water (add a little honey too if you like) about 15 minutes before you eat.
I like to use enzymes, too. helps digest food more effectively.

Honegar ... Organic apple cider vinegar and raw honey doesn't hurt to drizzle a tsp of honey 2 or 3 times a day until the problem is under control...Other things to help good digestion are enzymes and good bacteria replacement in your digestive tract .
I have the same trouble and this works really well the honey sooths your stomach and has healing and non acidic properties.Hope this helps
The vinegar regulates acid control for better digestion ...Believe it or not acid reflux is caused by not enough acid....

A teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of very warm water. Drink it fast and wait for the big burp. Your acid problem will be gone in a few minutes.

Try taking a probiotic. These contain the good bacteria that you should have in your digestive system. It works like a charm for me. You can find them at a natural food store like Whole Foods or Vitamin Cottage. My dad has been taking antacids for his whole life - he's 65. Now he takes a probiotic instead and is thrilled with the results.

Ibuprofen-trust me I've had to use it out @ the bar b/c my drink (on more than 1 occasion) made me burn. All I had was ibuprofen & a glass of COLD water. Ibuprofen reduces inflammation, it's always worked w/in 30 min if not way sooner. Sit up, don't lay down. Put a cold washcloth on your neck to help you chill and watch tv to take your mind off the pain.

Yogurt--or soy yogurt--is another way to get probiotics. I was diagnosed with mild reflux recently, so I hear ya. To prevent future episodes, don't go to bed less than three hours after eating, chew gum (works for me, too!), and find something that will relax you. I'm getting into yoga to try to center myself and maybe improve my physical condition in the process.
