Your mucous plug is a portion of mucous that forms in the neck of the cervix to hlep protect your baby during pregnancy from infections, etc. As your cervix begins to open and thin for labor the mucous plug can dislodge.
A mucus plug may be clear, slightly pink or blood tinged in color. It may be stringy mucus or sticky discharge. Some women may not even notice the loss of their mucus plug because there is already an increase in vaginal discharge during pregnancy.

A mucus plug, IME, looks like you've blown your nose, only it is seen after using the bathroom, like on the TP, or maybe sometimes in the undies. It's stringy, sometimes can be streaked with a bit of blood. They can be lost and re-form. It is not necessarily lost all at once, but can happen over the course of a few days or a few hours, just depending on your body. You may never notice if it happens. I only saw it with one of my 3 babies.
As for amniotic fluid, women usually think they have wet themselves if it is just a dribble (which can be the case if the baby's head is wedged in the pelvis and therefore acting as a cork!). Its appearance should be clear -- stained amniotic fluid is something the birth attendant looks for and indicates that the baby has had its first bowel movement while still in utero, which can indicate the baby is under stress.
The best way to tell is that amniotic fluid will have a sweet odor, unlike urine. If you are unsure, call or go see your health care provider. They can test the leaking fluid to determine whether is it amniotic fluid or not.
Good luck to you!

when your water breaks, it's usually a gush of fluid, followed by a continuous flow. it has an unusual, earthy smell. it's clear and pretty similar to water or sweat, so sometimes it can be hard to identify. but urine or sweat will typically dry and go away, while amniotic fluid will flow or trickle continuously.
your mucus plug is a thick ball of mucus that sits in your cervix. as your cervix dilates, the mucus plug will fall out, maybe all at once, and maybe in pieces. it will look like (this is gross) a ball of snot, maybe with a tiny bit of blood in it. you may find it in your panties, or in the toilet bowl. however, NOT EVERYONE notices their mucus plug.... what if it falls into the toilet when you're peeing in the middle of the night, in the dark?!? i watched for my mucus plug with both kids, and never saw it.
it's helpful to watch for these things as signs labor is getting clsoe, but remember that when you're really in labor, you'll know it.
good luck and congrats!

Well when your water breaks its pretty easy to tell, I've heard it feels like you peed your pants and you cant control it (its usually clear) and the mucus plug is like a big clump of mucus that comes out and fluid is the same stuff that comes out when your water break but not all at once.

I thought my water broke because my underwear got wet but when I went and got checked they said it was just my plug. Sometimes the plug looks like mucous, sometimes with blood, some people never see their plug.
My water didn't actually break until I was already at the hospital in labor at 5 cms. I was standing, changing into the hospital gown from my clothes and clear liquid just kept coming out running all the way down my leg.

You will definitely know when you go into labor. When you have any type of leaking fluid you will feel like you are peeing yourself. Signs of your mucus plug falling or close to falling is when you go to the bathroom to check your leaking water and you wipe your self and it has pink to red coloration. Then its definitely time to go to the hospital. The same thing happened to me

The mucus plug is a greenish looking glob like fluid that comes out when your cervix starts to open. Although it does mean that you are starting to dialate, it doesn't necessarily mean that you could b going into labor.

A mucous plug is exactly what it sounds like. It is kinda pinkish a is similar to what you blow out of your nose when you have a cold. (In texture, its not really what you blow out of your nose...) The fluid when your water breaks is clear and can be a gush or a slow steady flow, depending on where the baby is laying. You will know when you are in labor, I promise, it is a sensation you can't mistake. Congratulations and good luck.

THE MUCUS PLUG TO ME LOOKED LIKE SNOT, AND THE FLUIDS ARE SUPPOSED TO BE CLEAR BUT CAN BE GREEN MEANING THAT THE BABY HAS PASSED A BOWEL AND YOU NEED TO RUSH TO THE HOSPITAL IF THAT HAPPENS
