My '98 Mercury Villager is giving me all kinds of trouble. The most recent is the squealing in the back brakes. When I brake, they squeal really loud and painfully. And on top of that, this morning while driving to work, I noticed that the ABS light came on. Are the two related? And is it a critical issue that needs to be fixed immediately? I'm trying to save up for a new car, because this one is really ready to kick the can, but I don't want to drive the thing around and not get it fixed if I'm putting safety on the line.

If your rear brakes are squealing badly its time to bite the bullet and repair them.Likely need new friction and drums or rotors. I read the abs light came on after the squeal started. Not likely the ABS light is related to worn friction but it's possible.
The squeal may also be a bad wheel bearing and this could cause the ABS light to come on.Most ABS problems I see are broken wires to the sensors or the sensors themselves.
My suggestion is to have it looked at immediately and dont drive it.

I am not a specialist in Mercury vehicles or ABS systems.
However, when brakes squeal that is a sign that immediate attention needs to be given them.
Perhaps the pads are worn down to the bare metal and now metal rubs metal. This ruins the disks if we are talking about disk-brakes -- which seems likely here.
Of course, if you are running the brakes without pads - that in itself may become dangerous.
Thus your repair may become potentially much more expensive.
Please ask your Mercury representative now -- or a mechanic that you trust for an opinion.

Sounds like you need rear pads/shoes and possibly rotors/drums.
The ABS light could be because of the same thing.
As mentioned before, most shops give free brake inspection. Although rear brakes are only responsible for about 30% of your stopping power, do not put it off. It can cause much more expensive repairs to other items if you put it off for much longer.

When the ABS light is on, the system is off. Not critical, just remember your car's braking will be normal (not assisted by abs). As for the other noise, get it checked and get an estimate and decide from there.

Hmmmmm...let's see.
Warning light ABS=anti-lock braking system
your brakes=loud and painful squealing
Hmmmmm...I'd say the two ARE RELATED.
Your Villager'll run fine as ever, but STOPPING may become an issue as early as the very next time you hit the pedal. SAFETY IS THE ISSUE. Park it if you can't fix it.
The person you DON'T REAREND may be me!

Time to jack up the rad cap and replace the vehicle. Rear brakes probably need replacing... probably the reason for your ABS light

Yes, get the brakes checked TODAY. Most shops will do a free brake safety inspection.

It could be possible that it is a bad wheel bearing. When I had my car the ABS light came on and I heard a squealing/ humming noise does it get louder as you go faster? yes whatever the case is you should get it repaired.

Sounds like you either need new brake pads or you've gone past the replacement of the pads & now need new rotors.

most likely cause is a wheel speed sensor being out, you'll need to have some diagnostics done to find out which one, could possibly be the ABS pump
