For me, DearS is the best short love anime .... 12 episodes.
Chobits is alright too ... but its 27 episodes
School Days is so-so but unique ... 12 episodes
I'm guessing girls would like ouran-high-school-host-club (i personally don't but only coz i'm a guy ... it's a reverse harem ... meaning one girl with lots of guys) it has 26 episodes
I'd also recommend Nagasarete Airantou - but it is still ongoing and is at its 25th episode as of this writing.
Just try dearS ... I really liked it compared to others of the same genere.

check out "voices of a distant star" an ova by Makoto Shinkai. kinda sad but pretty good. The art is incredible too.
