In some aspects it could be considered as already underway in that fundamentalist Islamic Terrorists are attacking the West in many parts of the world and have been doing so for a number of years.

However, one of the most basic scenarios would be in the mid-east, in particular Pakistan. If the current government falls it will be up to the Pakistani military to hold the country together from outsiders taking over. If they fail it is most likely that Islamic fundamentalist will gain control and this will result with such a government controlling an existing stock pile of nuclear weapons which are deliverable on currently existing rockets.

This will put India on a war footing as with the real possibility of being attack by such a government with the hot resumption of the war with Pakistan. Since both of these countries have nuclear weapons currently deliverable on rockets, little will stand in the way of a real nuclear war.

This is even more possible when it is considered the Islamic fundamentalists believe in the apocalypse and the religious duty to ensue that it occurs (in this they are in the same group as the current president of Iran). With this reality the last remaining restraints will no longer exist to nuclear war. If this happens those same Islamic fundamentalists (following their stated intent) will fire some of these nuclear rockets into Israel.

Israel has an estimated nuclear arsenal of 300 to 600 deliverable nuclear weapons and if so attacked will have no choice but to retaliate. At this point anything is possible because Europe is also within the range of such Islamic weapons.

While it has become a politically correct practice to jump on America as the cause for all of these tensions, it is so easily forgotten that America is the only super power country to practice restraint. It has always been easy to end these near east problems overnight with multiple selected nuclear strikes and to do so with no concern of any other country or group of countries because all of them together cannot match the strength of the United States. Yet, the United States has enforced restraint on itself when trying to solve these problems. It is also forgotten, that the United States could (with little effort) become energy independent and have no need for foreign crude. This would have an even worse impact on these countries of the mid-east (and others) in that their economies would collapse over night and they have no other foundation in which to retreat into to support their populations. Their populations would starve by the hundreds of millions and wars would break out across the world.

All we need for a world war is for America to retreat behind its own borders and leave the world to its own just ends

Unfortunately, WWIII will be global suicide, therefore in answer to your question, as long as there's rational superpowers who believe in MAD, there will be no WW3. By definition, the next world war wil be nuclear, how could it not. In a nuclear war there will be no winner. In a nuclear world, the only true enemy is war itself.

The next World War will involve a nuclear exchange, how could it not if both sides believe no price for victory will be too high. In the first 30 minutes, nearly a billion people will have been vaporised, mostly in the US, Russia, Europe, China and Japan. Another 1.5 billion will die shortly thereafter from radiation poisoning. The northern hemisphere will be plunged into prolonged agony and barbarity.

Eventually the nuclear winter will spread to the southern hemisphere and all plant life will die. You ask what country would be victorious, you are asking when will we commit global suicide. My answer is it won't happen soon because the larger superpowers are more rational than the rump states in the middle east.

While we hear talk of a nuclear-Iran or a confrontation with NorKor, little is said about the 2 bulls in the glass shop. The arsenals of Russia and the US are enough to destroy a million Hiroshimas. But there are fewer than 3000 cities on the Earth with populations of 100,000 or more. You cannot find anything like a million Hiroshimas to obliterate. Prime military and industrial targets that are far from cities are comparatively rare. Our biggest threat is from an accidental launch by the Russians.

Well, if Bush decides to attack Iran you could have Russia and China come to Iran's aid. They both have powerful armies and might see an opportunity to aid an ally and stop American aggression. Then you might get Cuba, Venezuela and other South American countries hitting us from the south.
I think it will come down to a multi country agreement to finally stop the US's overt and covert interference of so many countries since WWII.
