TO A degree
but the food makes a place.

You bet. If it isn't majority of nitrogen/ oxygen mixture then I have a hell of a time breathing. If you set up a restaurant on say, Venus, which has a mostly methane/ carbondioxide atmosphere, I doubt you would get too many customers.

I'm such a geek. Ha!

It depends on if cleanliness is included in your definition of atmosphere and appearance. The first things I look for in a restaurant are;
safety- can your customers and employees get in and out and around if there was an emergency:
cleanliness/ sanitation- is everything, visable and non visable to the customer, clean, sanitary, and well maintained.
smoking/ non smoking- gotta keep em separated. I avoid any restaurant that doesn't have a no smoking section, I don't wanna get stinky over lunch.
yummyness factor- is the food good and priced right.
Location- important, but I will go out of my way to go to a good restaurant.
Decor- not terribly important to me, but if you have a theme restaurant, you should maintain the theme and not do it halfway.

There is a definite connection. But it isnt always logical. Some people like the local dive because of the atmosphere. Others wont go into a place unless it is the hottest spot in town. Many dont really even care if the food is substandard. It's all about the ambience.

The most important place to make an impression?

Bathrooms. Most people will not go back to a place that has filthy bathrooms.

Of course it does. Noone wants to regular a bar or restaurant that appears filthy. Atmosphere is very important to me.It can make a person comfortable or uncomfortable and greatly affect the whole dining experience. I like to go to places with a nice bar and televisions showing sports.

Most definitely. I will go to some restaurants that have mediocre food and a great atmosphere, just because I enjoy being there. Likewise there are places I avoid because I don't like the atmosphere although the food is good.

Of course. I have five senses and I use them. If a place smells of rotting rats, body odour and drugs I know I'm in the wrong place straight away. If the seats and tables are dirty, there is a dead body under the table and the waiter has a gun I'll get out of the bar as quickly as possible. Look around! Is this a place you want to be? Is it clean, friendly, attractive? Is the price right? Does the lighting and the music seem o.k. to you.
Perhaps you want peace and quiet when you eat. Perhaps you want loud rock music and people shouting, beer spilling and fights while you eat your burger. You choose. It's your life.

absoloutely. most people choose their place of eating within a moment of seeing the potential candidate. given a sceneario of walking along a line of restaurants the customer will choose a place where he'll meet warm freindly staff above all else but then be shown into an enviroment thats homely, unintimidating and has a certain something different. All this is futile if the food is crap, of course, but initially you gotta get the punters through the door.

For going in the first time, yes. Say if on Holiday or something, but normally look if they are busy and if they are we pick that one. However, We go to an amazing curry place where we live. It looks old fashioned and has still got the flowered carpet and pictures of elephants etc. but it's the best curry ever ( and I've had curries all over the country and abroad)so the decor is immaterial. I've been in these "posh" curry places....curry and service was horrible.

Yes, of course it does. It could be the best food in the world, but if the place looks like a dump you won't enjoy the whole 'dining experience'.

The food does count for a lot, but aesthetics are important.

Yes it does. Between the food and the atmosphere, for me it's about 50/50.

I don't worry about the appearance, but the atmosphere inside is definitely important.
