The Soviet Union was a barbaric, savage and backward edifice that rightly crumbled. It enslaved millions of people many non russians, and many non slavs...all who hated it! It was responsible for more genocide than the Nazis.
And yet the Russian people seem to be backing an aggressive thug like Putin! He is already trying to interfere in Ukraine, Belarus and Central Asia. He has been trying to intimidate Georgia and Estonia, supports Iran, North Korea and Burma, orders opponents killed both within and outside Russia, and backed Serbian genocide. And yet, most Russians love this idiot! Whats wrong with them?

And for those who enthuse about the old USSR, look how many people were slaughtered and enslaved by it. Look how economically backward it was, and look at the sheer elation in East Germany, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Bulgaria etc when they freed themselves from their Soviet masters. And the joy of the Armenians, Georgians, Azeris, Estonians, Latvians and Lithiuanians when they freed themselves from their Slavic masters!

I hope it is not coming back. If it does it will be very sad for the Russian people and the world. It is hard to say why the people there back him. I think much of it is that the media is very controlled. Also I think the people there see him as a very strong figure who fights for Russia.

Wow, that question took a lot of working through.
Now a 'brief' answer!
The Soviet Union is still there,if the Russian people are supporting Putin that is their choice.
Have the capitalist world really got the right to feel proud about their history? Would you like a list of the autocracies committed by capitalists?
No maybe not!
United Kingdom? Isn't that coming to an end?
Haven't the English exploited a lot of the world and their own island folk?
Russia won world war 2, how about that then?
Churchill and mates wanted to go on and try to destroy Russia, oh yes the capitalist have a lot to be proud of??
I don't think!!
My opinion is that Putin is doing his best to look after Russia, are your lot doing as well looking after their countries?
Just another point of view!

We would work to get them as a trading partner. Probably sign a mutual protection treaty. What caused the soviet union to collapse was the arms race. It didn't do much for us either. The soviet union and the us would not automatically be enemies. After all, we trade with Vietnam, and China has favored nation standing in trade deals.

The Soviet Union can not come back any more than the British Empire can. Putin has done more for Russia than anyone since Stalin (and I am not equating them!). The only good thing that the drunken sot Yeltsin did for his country was to usher in Putin. I hope Putin's successor is as good.

The Soviet Union was a disaster in every measurable sense.
Putin is to be watched extremely closely. His instincts are bullying and imperialistic.
Apart from a few good writers and the odd ballet Russia`s influence on the rest of the world has been entirely malign.

Who hated the USSR? The bourgeoisie? Myopic nationalists who couldn't anticipate what would happen? The fact is that life for most people in the USSR has regressed since the downfall of the union.
Putin will not attempt to re-unify them but doesn't intend to leave his office quickly. It isn't necessarily that he's widely supported, it's just that his supporters are the loudest and are given a greater forum to air their views. It's a known fact that his institution is responsible for the assassination of critics (Anna Politkovskaya, Litvinenko), attempts on political adversaries lives (Viktor Yushchenko); violent opression (Chechnya), and youth movements (Nashi) designed to instil right-wing ideals in the country's youth. Don't just assume he's popular.

I come from a Slavic nation, Slovenes are the most Western of all the Slavic nations...Our country, which gained its Independence in 1991 used to be a part of former Yugoslavia...There are people in Europe, who believe our "secession" doomed the fate of Yugoslavia and provoked one of the bloodiest civil wars ever conducted in Europe in which many tenths of thousands civilians died or were made refugees...With the death of charismatic WW2 Yugoslav partisan leader Tito, which died in may of 1980 things in Yugoslavia went into chaos ...Nations of Yugoslavia ( there were at least 6 principal nations ) renounced on so called "brotherhood and unity" strongly imposed by communists after they came to power in 1945...
Yugoslav army wasn't fit to meet the challenge being organized on multy - national basis, so its internal collapse led to a foundation of numerous "ethnic militia", which harassed locals of any other nation but their...In the beginning those were mainly Serbs formations, but soon after Croats also developed their armed forces and Croatian official policy greatly contributed to deterioration of relations between Serbs and Croats on mixed populated territories...Slovenes were lucky to escape the slaughter that followed and is probably well known to you...
By what I just wrote, I want to give you some kind of picture of a typical "fall of the communism" syndrome...You can see, things weren't so simple everywhere...

What nonsense.
Pution has regained his nations wealth from the hands of an over-privileged 99% Jewish clique of rogues.
Berezhovsky, Kordokov, etc.
Russians demand a firm and capable leader and they are exceptionally pleased with Mr Putin.
If only we in the West had such a brilliant leader- our civilisation would not be decaying.
