It's a form of camouflage. Most butterflies have colorful wings like the petals of the flowers they usually visit, which in turn are bright in color in order to attract insects. Also, the wing color and pattern aids in attracting a partner.

Oh heavens, butterflies are colorful, light, usually come spring and summer when things are bright and gay, around flowers and the flutter gentle angel wings. Spiders creep out of dark spaces and scare the heck out of you. And some bite. It's not a social thing. The light fluttering of the butterfly is of beauty and delicacy - soft and gentle like a little breeze. Spiders are the stuff of nightmares and darkness, and while their webs are beautiful no one likes a creepy crawling thing crawling across their face, while a butterfly landing near you feels fortunate.

Some patterns and colors blend with their environment while other bright colors broadcast that they taste nasty. Other colors and patterns are meant to scare away a predator.
