actually they don't sit on flowers, they drink the flower's nectar and they lay their eggs as well on the flowers. same thing with bees.

To get the nectar of the flower of course. In the event it gets the pollen of the flower to other flower to pollinate then that how the flowers multiply. Or better yet another answer would be they don't sit they stand on flowers. hehehe.

That's where they eat and/or lay their eggs. Butterflies are nectar eaters and in most cases, lay their eggs either on the flower stems or the leaves of the plant.
