Mmmm......

I'm led to believe they're a soulful people, who have a deep seam of fatalism running through their collective psyche, from all those years of oppressive state control, the national trauma of ww2, the upheaval of the 1917 Revolution and civil war, and hundreds of years of cruel, despotic monarchy before that....

I know they were scarey during the Cold War, as our western leaders had convinced us that the armoured divisions of the Red Army were ready to smash their way through Europe at a moment's notice, and 'The Bomb' could be dropped on us at any minute.

I know they weren't the 'good guys' in Hungary, Czechoslovakia and Afghanistan.

I know we owe them an enormous debt of gratititude for their stoicism and incomparable sacrifice during ww2.

I know that - despite the paranoia of the Cold War years - the USSR was a vital check and balance to US foreign policy adventures. I know the world today desperately needs some kind of counter-balance to American hegemony.

Russia certainly has a role to play on the world stage, and for all of us in the West, it would be far better to have them with us, inside the proverbial tent and p***ing out, rather than outside and p***ing in.

Russia has so much potential to be a good thing - good luck to 'em.

Hi I'm Indian studying in the US and don't know much about Russia but I admire it for producing brilliant scientists and technical brains. I've read several Russian authors like Iridov, Piskunov and others who left a great impact on me. Indeed Russia had made great technological progress in the Soviet-era e.g. Sputnik was the first spacecraft (beating America in the space age). The space station Mir came way before ISS and another invention I can think of, is the Kalashnikov rifle AK-47 and AK-56. Sadly, most terrorists in the world use that technology today.

I don't recollect having met any Russians straight from Russia but it's because I've met people from Belarus, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Georgia and Armenia - they all claim to be Russian when abroad and speak the language and have several common aspects. But yes, I've met Russian Jews from Israel.

As regards to your question, Russia should not repeat the mistake of Soviet Union as another arms race is not healthy in today's environment. Instead of being a superpower, it should only work with the United States and global community on several issues common to everybody.

Peace.

If it were up to the people, I believe Russians and Americans would be great friends and allies. Unfortunately, we have Putin and Bush...So, here we go again. I think the Russian people are awesome. (they handle winter so well). I support them as a superpower if only to balance the scales. There is so much untapped potential in a firm alliance with Russia. I am hopeful this will occur. We were moving that way until about 6-7 years ago.

Well, ive seen some very pretty Russian girls in my time so thats a plus. Also i like that building they have with the funny dome type thingies, i think they call it Red Square or something. I wouldnt mind visiting it.
Other than that, i dont care if they become a superpower or not.

Our present administration has managed to turn just about the entire World against us. If we can get a diplomatic President in this next election, then we should be able to rebuild our relationship with Russia. I really don't trust Putin or any puppet he would use.

I think its Russia's fault that the US is currently running rough shod all over the world.

Just like with the US political structure, we need a counter balance in the world. The US used to think twice about certain actions given the USSR's former power....not anymore.

It's a shame what this administration has done to turn our former allies into enemies now. Hopefully we'll get a new President who isn't arrogant and understands diplomacy. It's never too late to save our country !
