It is the easiest way to get a uniformly balance die so that when it is shaken or rolled there is an equal chance of any of the six faces landing upper-most. This is especially the case when the spots are made by taking the material out of the die. The centre of gravity will be at the centre of the cube so rotational moments about it are the same in all directions.

1 is opposite 6, 2 is opposite 5 and 3 is opposite 4. That is how it was made.
