Also how do I know he has enough food in his belly to last hibernation.

It's not essential to their survival and as Dion said if done incorrectly it can be fatal. Box turtles should be in peak physical health before hibernation and the hibernation temperatures and humidity must be strictly maintained. If you are not sure about the process it's not worth the risk.
One of the prerequisites to hibernation is to actually deprive them of food for a while and make sure their digestive tract is completely empty. Undigested food will rot inside them otherwise and likely kill the turtle.

If you are not sure about how to brumate him, do not do it. The only real reason to do so is to prepare him for breeding. The smallest thing done wrong will kill him. Also, you have to make sure there is no food in his system or it will rot and kill him. I really recommend you do not even attempt it.

Inexperienced people should not try to hibernate their reptiles. If you do it incorrectly, you can kill them.
