You missed some critical information here -- what were you trying to do when you got this error message?

If you are trying to ping a computer that is connected to a home router from a computer outside that router, you probably won't be able to. When you type IPCONFIG on a PC connected to a router, you see the address that the router has assigned to the PC. But, because the router is sharing one IP address among several computers, it gives out "fake" addresses (usually in the 192.168 subnet). The actual address of the router on the internet will be determined by your ISP. The router uses a technique called NAT to translate between the REAL IP address and the fake ones given to the local computers.

Because of all this, when you're operating outside of the router's subnet, you can't ping 192.168.1.2 (a likely fake address of your router-connected PC), because that address doesn't appear on the global internet. You COULD ping the address given by the ISP to your ROUTER, but your router might not respond to ping requests.

First of all Too Little Info.
Assume:
You are trying to connect to another computer on your network.
Hardwired connection to router/switch/hub on both computers.
Both computers can connect to the internet.

To Do:
Ensure both computers are in the same Workgroup (right click My Computer, Properties, Network Identification.
Ensure File Sharing is turned on.
Turn off Firewall(s) until you get it working, them turn it back on. Reconfigure as required.
Run IPCONFIG /ALL, verify settings on the two machines.
Restart the router and both computers

Good Luck
