For those reading this who don't know the term... I know that it sounds crazy but there IS such a thing. It's for those interested in protecting security systems.

Here's a definition of 'ethical hacking' from a British site that has a DVD course on the topic.
"Ethical Hackers are computer and network experts who attack a security system on behalf of its owners, seeking vulnerabilities that a malicious hacker could exploit. To test a security system, ethical hackers use the same methods as their less principled counterparts, but report problems instead of taking advantage of them."

I can't speak to the standards wherevere you're located and I'm not into promoting corporations but here's the site mentioned-

However, I think that the you should register on www.ethicalhacker.net and join in one of the forums where you're most likely to get the info needed. Somebody there will be able to point in the right direction.

All the best!

The keyword you want is "white-hat" which refers to hackers which will not break laws. There are newsgroups and websites and lots of help for it.

There are some good O'Reilly books that have hacker in the title which are good to read.

One of the biggest recommendations if you want to learn how to be a white hat is to run a "honeypot". Thats a computer which is setup specifically to be a target for crackers. That way you can learn how to spot what they do, how to remove them, how to block them, etc.
