budgies are cute and easy to care for. also i had 2 pet rats. yes i no ewww! but these rats were from a pet store and are breed just to have for pets. they are so easy to train and you can trust them to be easy to take care of and they are very low maitenace. and eat things like bread and apples. fish arer boring and you cant do anything with them.

Birds make a lot of noise and they are messy, but they interact more with you than fish.

A Betta (Siamese fighting fish) is nice, they live alone in a bowl and you don't need an air filter for them.

Small rodents like mice & hamsters are apt to bite, but a rat usually won't. A lot of people can't get past the look of the tail though.

I have a bearded dragon and he's awesome! They have so much personality! However, don't get one if you don't have the time and/or money to feed him and clean his cage every day. They require quite a bit of attention as babies. Believe it or not, rats make excellent pets as well. They are very smart and love to be handled if socialized correctly. They can get smelly though so be sure to clean the cage often. The hairless ones are awefully cute! Good luck finding your "pet that's not a pet." =)

Pets that aren't pets? You need to elaborate... Do you mean exotics, or animals that aren't running around the house?

...Either way, if you're allowed, I'd recommend a pair of rats, as they're quite friendly and affectionate.

Rats make great pets. They are intelligent, clean, and can be easily trained in many different ways (housetrained to be let out and about, trained to do tricks..).
