I can't BELIEVE all these people on here who have never done it! It's like a right of passage in childhood! Sucking helium once or twice doesn't hurt you. It only causes a temporary high-pitched (hilarious) voice. You'll sound like a Munchkin for 5-7 seconds until it wears off. Just like in the Wendy's commercial. Overuse, though, can starve your brain of oxygen. But who's going to do THAT?! In fact, in pressurized deep sea operations (think Navy) you will most likely be given a helium/oxygen combo to breathe. I believe it's called Heliox. I just finished reading a book on that. So, buy a helium balloon, suck some out and pinch the balloon btw your fingers, talk and laugh. One balloon will not kill you. I just did it again back in March. Have fun! (I expect thumbsdown from ones who won't read this till the end.)

Breathing in pure helium deprives the body of oxygen, as if you were holding your breath. If you couldn't breathe at all, you'd start to die in minutes—as soon as your body exhausted the supply of oxygen stored in the blood. But helium speeds up this process: When the gas fills your lungs, it creates a diffusion gradient that washes out the oxygen. In other words, each breath of helium you take sucks more oxygen out of your system. After inhaling helium, the body's oxygen level can plummet to a hazardous level in a matter of seconds.

I have never tried it, but I recommend that you do not do it, since there is some chance that you could hurt yourself. I do not remember where I heard it from, but it really isn't worth breathing it if there is a chance you could get hurt. The link may help you. I hope it does.

I have. Just makes your voice high and squeaky for a very short period of time. No pain at all. I thought it was a hoot. Go ahead, give it a try.

yes I HAVE when I was a kid, just for fun at school, however its not a good idea I found out later, apparently it stretches (or something) your vocal chords and can even be dangrous...
Note: I didn't personally notice anything other than my voice change... as in no pain or anything...
