I'm no expert on Plato, but as I understand it:

1. Artistic minds would be less accepting of the rigid system he suggests, and their works could cause others to question the system (not just the government, but the underlying cultural assumptions) as well, undermining its absolute authority.

2. Those pols who go out of their way to bash Hollywood or any controversial art (i.e. Guiliani vs. Brooklyn Museum of Art) are clearly upset when anyone rocks the boat, for basically the same reasons. Any painter who represents god/jesus/whoever as anything other than a daVinci-esque Italian white man get hammered.

3. It places concepts and ideals ahead of actual people; to me, concepts and ideals should be defined and shaped by human practices, not vice versa. It is also far more authopritarian than I could tolerate (I'd rather be an artist than an ideologue any day).

4. Legitimate? That's a toughie. I suppose if a piece of artwork (such as a collage) included security documents that would clearly and directly (not theoretically) undermine public safety (such as revealing a combination-lock password to an arsenal, or plans to make a nuke). That's all i can think of.
