expecting us to devote our entire lives to something which could be just as illusionary as immortality- where is the basis for this? why won't God in his awesome glory (I'm not being sarcastic) simply do away with doubt and show himself to us? with the very eyes he gave us why won't he let us see? surely it's within his power. it seems unnecessarily cruel to be kept in the dark.

At one time he did. He spoke to the Isrealites, parted the Red Sea, etc etc. What was the turn out? Again, doubt. So God is trying a different tactic. Faith.

God has given so many signs that you just won't see. He has made Himself manifest to billions of people but you can't take a hint.
All the while all you have had to do was ask.
With a serious mind and an open heart. It doesn't matter where you are but it is best to have total concentration and little distraction. Turn the TV off. Sit back and listen.
Then say Lord I believe help me in my unbelief. Then admit you have a problem believing and if He is real would He please make Himself real to you. Say His name. Jesus, cause Satan has to leave when you do, and then shut up and listen for that soft voice. Feel with your spirit. In Jesus name Amen.
This is not a commitment or asking for salvation. Let Him prove Himself first and then make a decision to follow or not. He knows what is in your heart and will respond accordingly.

Human eyes cannot see The Creator. The Apostles said the same thing to Jesus:"Show us the Father and it will be enough". He told them that those who saw him had seen the father in that Jesus is what God would be like if He were a man. Not physically but how he lived his life and by what he did. That is the example He has provided.

Because God is Spirit. Joh 4:23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshipers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.
Joh 4:24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

Besides can you not see within your self? Your life you have, everything around you to keep you alive is that not enough for you to believe there is One True Mighty Creator God?

And how can you develop faith in your heart if you can see God, for because of His Mighty Power, we us His creation can't sustain His glory to see God, that's why we were given a blessed hope, "Eternal Life" that someday all who believes and follow Lord Jesus will be with Him forever and ever. Amen.
Then if you have faith in Lord Jesus surely you can see Him and be with Him, but for now because you're a sinner like me and still live in the flesh so, no way to see Him, but do not say and think God didn't prove Himself to us; Rom 1:19 Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath showed it unto them.
Rom 1:20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
Rom 1:21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
Rom 1:22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools. AMEN

God HAS shown Himself several times in history. It hasn't mattered-humans still don't believe.
He sent His son to us, but we killed Him.
He sent Moses to the Israelites, but they turned away from Him.
Every time he has gotten close in the history of the Bible, we have shunned Him.
He will prove Himself to you, however, you have to be willing.
Is it any coincidence that all prophets that speak good have been mistreated throughout the history of the world? I don't just mean religious prophets, but those who speak of peace and love and equality. A couple of modern day examples are Martin Luther King Jr. and John Lennon. It has been like this throughout the ages. We as humans don't listen when someone is speaking good. We string them up on a cross, execute them, or throw them in prison.
Why should God make a mass appearance? He will work one on one with you anytime that you are ready.

If he showed himself today just as he did when Jesus walked the earth, there would still be skeptics, there would still be people using him for his miracles then dumping him off, and there would still be people that think he's a quack and want to lock him up or even worse. He tried that once and saw the outcome, theres no way he's going to do that again until the time is right. Then Your going to wish you were blessed with blind faith. As far as miracles go I think hes done more than his share.

If you read the Old Testament, God tried this at the time of Moses. The people were all terrified at His presence. So, God made Moses a spokesman for him.

Now to explain in another way in real life today.

There are many people who are get nervous when certain people enter the world.

A general in the service.
A boss at the job.
A leader of the Country
A religious leader.

If people get nervous at leaders who are human, how much more nervous will they become in the presence of God.

Why don't God Show Himself?

Man couldn't handle it.

Great question and well expressed!
Consider the OT idea that to look upon God and behold his full awesome glory would result in your death. Maybe it is mercy not cruelty that keeps God from fully revealing Himself.
Perhaps we only get as much of God's glory as we are ready for.

It is understandable for some to feel that if God simply showed himself to us, we would believe. And yet, it is God himself, in his inspired record, who says that we are unable to see him and keep on living. Exodus 33:20 tells us that Moses could not see God and live. We are fleshly human creatures and cannot use our fleshly human eyes to see such an awesome personage. This is not difficult to understand, though. We can barely look directly at the sun and even a solar eclipse must be watched with glasses to protect our eyes. If we cannot see these phenomena, how much less so could we gaze upon the Creator who created them!

Still, would we not have faith if He showed himself to us? Not necessarily. Again, it is God who teaches us, at Romans 10:14-21:

"How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!" But not all the Israelites accepted the good news. For Isaiah says, "Lord, who has believed our message?" Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ. But I ask: Did they not hear? Of course they did: "Their voice has gone out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world." Again I ask: Did Israel not understand? First, Moses says, "I will make you envious by those who are not a nation; I will make you angry by a nation that has no understanding." And Isaiah boldly says, "I was found by those who did not seek me; I revealed myself to those who did not ask for me." But concerning Israel he says, "All day long I have held out my hands to a disobedient and obstinate people."

Yes, under divine inspiration, the apostle Paul assists us in recognizing the correlation between hearing the word [not seeing God] and having faith. It is this that reaches the heart. That is why verse 17 says that faith is a result of hearing the message. Why even Israel "saw" God in that they witnessed with their " very eyes" the awesome miracles put on display by God. One after the other. Yet, look what they did: Psalms 78:37-41 reports that their hearts were not steadfast with God; they would keep rebelling and it would hurt God's heart . But Romans 10:20, above, says that God was found by those not looking for him. God says he revealed himself to those who didn't even ask.

If we are to find God, if He is to reveal himself to us, we must listen to those sent forth to teach his word as Romans describes. Listen with a view to responding. Then it is that we will "see" the True God with the eyes of our heart.

Why do people refuse to see the proof right infront of them? God will not chase those who don't want to know, people are not looking to find proof that god is there, they are looking to find proof that he does not exist, have they found it? No! God is not keeping anyone in the dark, most people choose to stay in the dark.
