try reinstalling your sound drivers first. if that didn't work, check out other speakers / headphones, as your auido jack may be at fault. reinstalling xp may have little to no effect as xp doesn't have drivers for sound. it will only have an effect if your problem is virus related and you reformatted.

You need to define "problems" when asking for help. No sound, poor quality, low volume, system sounds ok but no cd sounds etc etc.

Have you checked sound is not turned down or muted?

Do your speakers work on another system?

If you reinstall windows, you will lose all your data and programs on your hard disk. If you do a repair, you should be ok.

Try this instead. Boot the system up then insert XP disk.
Click start, click run, type cmd and enter.
In the DOS box that appears type sfc /scannow.
This will System File Check XP and reload damaged or missing files. Takes about 30-40 minutes so have patience.
Explore other possibilities first. You should check updates after running SFC as I am not sure whether they are removed by this process.

Re-installing the Sound driver would be the first thing to do. If that doesnt work, u can try reinstalling Xp but remember to back up your files as u may loose them upon reinstalling the OS.

Before I got that desperate, I would go to the devices under system in control panel and double click on the sound device. In there is a list of the programs that are loaded to make it work. You can manually delete these items. Go to the makers web site, download the correct drivers and store them in a file. Reboot and do not allow automatic load. Force it to use the new drivers you downloaded. Formatting the drive will not be advantageous because you will have to either find and load or update all drivers, security fixes, etc.

Reinstalling Windows XP will uninstall all programs, files and folders in your computer even all your drivers.

Unless:
1.Your computer (especially CPU) is branded. Some drivers can't be uninstalled on the branded PC.

I tried it on my cousin.

2. You do have installers in your sound, video card and motherboard. Installing these drivers will enable these sounds.

But be sure, (to test it) your speaker or headphone is connected. Its useless even if you install the driver but the hardware is disconnected.

I doubt it but what are the problems you are having?
Most sound problems are corrupt or missing drivers so your starting point would be to update your sound drivers.
