It doesn't hurt at all. You do feel funky, but not because of the EEG--what they do is mark your head in various places with a pencil so they can decide where they need to place wires. Then they use a cold cream-like cream to attach the wires (so don't plan on going out afterwards--it gets in your hair, but it doesn't stick like the cream they used in earlier days). Then they leave the room, and with me they turn off the lights. You'll probably hear strange sounds, like clicking or buzzing sounds--it's perfectly normal. Those are the sounds of the wires hitting each other whenever you move a little. You'll need to stay very still, unless they tell you otherwise.
I have epilepsy, and one possible trigger is flashing lights, so after they've left me in the dark for a while, they start flashing lights in there--they should tell you before they start so they don't freak you out.
The EEG feels like it takes forever, but it really only lasts about 15 minutes or so. There are also portable EEG machines that they use to see how you react over a 24-hour period, and those are a pain, but it's basically the same thing--you just carry a machine around with you as you're wearing the wires.

The first answer is very good. Depending on something your doctor is looking for, they will probably us a strobe light for several minutes to flash at different speeds. I could keep my eyes closed but the brain still responds to the stimuli. Not bad at all. Got through with my test, got a quick shower and flew out of town within a few hours. Good luck and hope the docs find what they are looking for. G.

EEG - Electroencephalogram; Brain wave test.
Electrodes (like an EKG, but much smaller) will be placed at various spots on your head.
Will read your brain function. Does not hurt, but you may have goop in your hair from the electrodes to wash out after you get home. Tests for neurological conditions, or lack thereof.
