Is Baking Soda Gluten Free

2016-09-29 22:08:58 · answer #4 · answered by ? 4 · 0 0

The chemical, sodium bicarbonate, when produced by the chemical reaction involving ammonia, carbon dioxide, water, and concentrated brine would be gluten free.

When packaged as bicarbonate of soda for use as baking powder, there may be additives such as flour, which would mean that it was not gluten free.

As in everything else, you have to check the label at the time of purchase - even if you bought the same product last week.

Spices are safe unless you are getting into marinades and mixes. Betty Crocker has recently come out with gluten free cake mixes. There is chocolate and yellow and a brownie mix. They are usually found in the cake mix section at the grocery store. If your store has a specialty foods section, they may also have Pamela's mixes which are good or one or two other brands. Whole Foods also has gluten free products. If you can't find the mixes, then there are gluten free flour brands that usually have a cake recipe on the package or you can go to their website for the recipe.
