I'm moving to Kadena Air Force Base in Okinawa, Japan sometime in August of 2008 as a married spouse with no dependents. I'm beginning to research career and education opportunites. I'll be graduating with a bachelor's of science degree in Psychology from Wright State University in Spring of 2008. Does anyone know what kind of employment opportunites I can get with that? It could be business or psychology related. With the master's degree I'm looking to do relationship counseling or a research focus. Basically, I want to go there with a plan to keep moving forward with my life while starting our life (my soon to be husband's and mine). Any suggestions are appreciated! Thank you! :)

SOFA agreements state you cannot work off base in any capacity other than as an Conversational English teacher. On base, most jobs are reserved for Japanese nationals. Frankly, unless you get REALLY lucky, there will be nothing on base that will utilize your degree, as most jobs for spouses are limited to MWR, commissary and exchange positions.

HOWEVER, getting that Masters will be pretty easy for you to do while there. There are several colleges on base with satellite campuses.

All counselors typically need the Masters or Doctorate before being eligible for a position.

When you get your degree you can be a DoDDS school teacher, or a Clinical Psychologist and more.

Check out Kadena 18Th Services
MCCS

Also check usajobs.gov (i think) so you can check out the GS jobs. When you get on the site click on browse jobs, pick Japan, Okinawa. The jobs will be listed. Also keep checking the CHRO in person because the site and the office have times when they do not match.

There is the Kadena Services HRO
MCCS HRO NAF Camp Foster
CHRO (GS / WG) Camp Foster

i was stationed at kadena for 3 years. my suggestion is finish your bachelor and start your masters after you arrive. if i remember correctly there are 5 universities located on base. a couple are just for masters. when it comes to working on base there i would just wait until you get there and take a look at the job then. you can look at usajobs.com i think it is and see all government jobs all over the world. but you dont know if they will be open when you arrive. i would wait and when you get there go to DODDS and the GS job offices and see what they have. with the GS jobs they have spousal pref but i dont think they have that with the dodds.
there are a lot of jobs there. the base is nice and big plus you dont have to work on kadena, you can go to one of the other bases and apply for jobs they have. you are not restricted to the base you are stationed at. there are 6-8 bases on okinawa. you can look them up and see what there HRO has open. when we were there i just go a full time job through HRO which is a NAF job. I meet a lot of people that way. Anyways there are a lot of choices so i wouldnt worry about it at this moment.
